Driscoll’s graphite drawings reference still frames of an eruption of Anak Krakatau in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait.

The volcanic eruption is a violent act. In these drawings, the eruption is prolonged in an effort to create a greater understanding of its movement. Each drawing is created through graphite rubbings of small circles. This repetitive mark accumulates and then reveals the structure within the column of ash. It is through this sequence of images that the minute structural changes of the column become noticeable. Time is expanded in order to focus our attention on small moments within monumental events.

Artist Bio: Angela Driscoll is a visual artist who explores time and narrative while creating visual and audio work from collected data. Her body of work includes artist books, drawings, installations, video, and sound. Angela received her MFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in Book Arts and Printmaking, and she currently teaches at Loyola University.

How to Build a Forest

For the inaugural EXPOSE project, Angela Driscoll, Taney Roniger, and Ying Zhu were asked to address the restrictions, while simultaneously embracing the potential for this unique, yet often overlooked space. Each of these artists share an interest in the ways in which communication and data are transferred and processed through varying techniques of repetition and pattern, paralleling those inherent in the natural world. The positing of each installation in a public space allows for multiple viewing experiences throughout the day and night by passersby as well as visitors to the CAC. By employing this unique exhibition space—considering its location, function, and potential for artistic experimentation—this initiative cultivates relationships locally, nationally, and internationally among contemporary artists, the public, and the CAC. For EXPOSE, Driscoll—by means of photo documentation—has recreated Score for LOC Call Numbers, a site-specific installation originally presented at Tulane University’s Nadine Vorhoff Library in LOSS.RITUAL.RELIC. Residue: The Archive. The exhibition was organized by local artist Jan Gilbert through The Vestiges Project (a local artist collective) as a satellite exhibition for the inaugural biennial of Prospect New Orleans in 2008. Patterns are represented both visually and aurally in this work through a modified version of the call numbers used by the Library of Congress to organize books. For Driscoll’s version, shelves of library books were covered with colorful paper sleeves and stickers that referenced each book’s assigned call number. To allow the books to remain in circulation, the original call numbers remained on the spine of each book. Driscoll’s playful construction expands our knowledge of how information can be processed and displayed and reminds us that the library, as a house of knowledge, ultimately seeks to extend our awareness of the world. A score, which can be accessed by dialing 504.355.0083, references the dots on the spine of each book with an audio translation of this unique classification system.  –Angela Berry

Blog Drawings are based on information researched from web log entries-specifically their language and grammar. These drawings of graphite and woven paper represent information gathered in a single day of reading, which then get translated into color coded categories and a system of mark making. The entries are an immediate resource of data-inspired compositions, both in a visual and a musical sense.

Score for LOC Call Numbers

The way we gather and organize knowledge determines how we react to a world increasingly dominated by databases of information. Our challenge is in how we systemize data to maintain accessibility. We arrange information, and patterns emerge.

In Score for LOC Call Numbers, patterns are represented both visually and aurally, reinforcing the innate beauty within systems of information, specifically the Library of Congress call numbers in one library aisle. Within the context of a library as a building to house knowledge, we are more aware of how complex systems need a flexible structure to sort the immense amount of new information that is exponentially available. I have created an information aesthetic that reinforces the inherent patterns within this method of categorization.

The books within one aisle of the Nadine Vorhoff Library are wrapped in paper, the spine of each marked with a visual code directly correlating to the call number. This code directly dictates the score and the music that comes from this data set. The music can be listened to while simultaneously viewing the score on the book spines. The self reflexivity of this work, forces one to look not at the knowledge contained within each book, but at the system-in this case, the Library of Congress call numbers-that is used to arrange the texts.
